An indictable offence is a criminal offence which is considered serious and may carry a harsher penalty than a summary or ‘triable either way’ offence.

Indictable offences are heard in the Crown Court.

An indictment is a formal document which details the charges the defendant is accused of. Each offence is listed on the document as a ‘count’.
